We software folks just SUCK.

Recently, the hardware folks brought us SSD. Everything should be supremely fast now compared to the old days with HDD. Instead, things are just the same, but in order to achieve "the same", we now *need* SSD. Working with HDD is impossible now.
Hardware folks brought us GBs and GBs of cheap RAM. Everything should be supremely fast now compared to the old days with MBs of RAM. Instead, things are just the same, but in order to achieve "the same", we now *need* GBs and GBs of RAM. Working with 4GB is impossible now.
I don't remember this slowness that we have now on multi core GHz CPUs from my old 386 10-ish MHz days.

Damnit, in order to run a really simple RPG (Disco Elysium) on a 5 year old laptop, I have to tune the thing for the game not to be unbearably slow. It has no real graphics!
Compared to that, in the old days, Sam n Max (the best of all RPGs) seemed to be running on a 500 M$ super computer, but it was just a lame 486
Don't get me wrong. We did improve a lot of software systems, and can do much more number crunching much more easily.

But hell, why do consumer devices feel like they're not going anywhere? How the hell can a mobile phone *ever* be slow?? It's a damn phone.
