Not only does @AOC completely expose Zuckerberg’s inadequacy as the head of, well, *any* group or organisation she shows that he is unwilling to answer basic questions about how his company undermines democracy by profiting from targeted disinformation campaigns. https://twitter.com/Reuters/status/1187179399386288135
It’s fitting that some of his testimony is an exercise in disinformation. She asks about Facebook hypothetically profiting from voter suppression campaigns. He answers a completely different question about the instigation of violence via hate speech.
Another part of me wonders if this was less an obfuscation tactic and more that he was simply struggling to keep up. At times it looked like he was not processing what she was saying beyond the first four words of each question. RAM upgrade needed.
The social web is arguably the most powerful medium to effectively disseminate propaganda in human history. That the regulation of billion dollar social media companies is still an open question suggests that this has not been fully grasped yet.
Such social media companies are not, and have never been, a “public forum”. They are privately owned networks that have a single priority: harvesting profits. Primarily from selling their users’ information to those who which to target them. Everything else is secondary.
