Man Final Fantasy X really was a special game

Came out before linear, story-driven "cinematic experiences" had prescribed types to them, so it got to go nuts with the concept, unimpeded by expectation
FFX also wears its late 90's, early 2K future-optimism with pride. Heaven is a homogeneous post-scarcity technoscape that plays hella sports brah, did you catch the game?, Hell is distinct ethnostates with medieval era level of tech all cartoonishly ensnared by religious dogma
We would all live in The City, be eternally bathed in beautiful light-polluted skyline night, showing midriff, and livin' la vida loca

Oh and everyone dyes their hair, but in a hot way, not in that greasy disgusting lefist way
This really was the way we saw things, our Umwelt. And in hindsight, it seems we were much more likely to head in that direction than the one we ended up going

What happened, what fucked our trajectory? It couldn't have all been 9/11, right?
I think when people talk about "90's optimism, they're mostly drawing from the pure ecstasy of this time. If not for being punctuated by them, the 90's would probably be considered a rather dour period of time compared to 80's grandstanding and 00's terrorage
I remember all these young, dazzling families, parents true workplace professionals, bristling with energetic pride ready to cut red tape, pick up slack, and have lots of bouncing babies who'd be happily spoiled rotten
Did you ever go to a mall during that time? Holy hell--it was magnificent! Malls were 4 dimensional structures also always bathed in night. The Christmas trees were silver and all 400ft tall, crashing through the roof. You could barely walk with all the silver tinsel and snowmen
It was all silver because silver is the color of the city before you are informed that it's actually steel. But the lights are all these beautiful gold incandescent bulbs that always burn at the exact right lumosity. They used quintessence for the filaments, you see
It really was a time that happened. I saw it myself. The robot manservants were supposed to arrive in most houses before the internet did, or maybe as a package deal. Oh and Mars? That was going to be a turn-of-the-millenium thing, an interplanetary bash
It was like this basically

Other highlights: Every city was becoming NYC instead of every other city, Latin people were really spicy cutting-edge metropolitan and hot, and Creed, everyone forgets about Creed
Was there ever a more golden era? Very short-lived to be sure, and inconvenient to refer to in that it happened to be split by the edge of a decade. But for the life of me, I can't believe any other time was so certain everything was going to so very well
Women were the most beautiful they've ever been. They sang about the rest still being unwritten, and they were really into being in the rain, primarily to dance. And so the men followed, joined them in the rain, to dance, and in The City, for cappuccino
Again, in hindsight, this was anomalous. Who let us get so happy? And ours is the return to the norm. But it was the enormous spike in outlook, and we did have some really fuckin fantastic things going for us--world peace, the internet, the food pyramid
I swear up and down, as I saw those fireworks go off above Everywhere on 12:00AM January 1, 2000, I was absolutely certain the future would be an unending dreamland, every year being beyond the imagination of the previous
So again. What in the hell happened? I can't remember the last time someone asked this. All that time after 9/11, we promised we would go back and address this, figure out how to get back to The City once we'd processes this emotionally. We must've forgot, probably the Recession
I think most of this desire to return to an earlier time, politics or nostalgia, is outlet for the psychological trauma of losing our way at that point. We never got all together to dance in the rain forever
I can hardly live with the thought that we gave up this dream just because of 9/11. And yet...

It can't just be 9/11, can it?

It was all 9/11, wasn't it?
In memoriam
