Earlier this year I warned that @TheOceanCleanup would catch and kill floating marine life. This week they announced they're collecting plastic, and their picture shows HUNDREDS of floating animals trapped with plastic (red circles).
We need to talk about this. https://twitter.com/RebeccaRHelm/status/1087765060943052801

. @MiriamGoldste, who spent years sorting floating marine life from plastic confirms. Here is my article predicting this problem almost a year ago. https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2019/01/ocean-cleanup-project-could-destroy-neuston/580693/
The Ocean Cleanup responded to my initial article, however, there were issues with their reply... https://theoceancleanup.com/updates/the-ocean-cleanup-and-the-neuston/
And I covered each of these issues one-by-one in my response. http://www.deepseanews.com/2019/02/the-ocean-cleanup-struggles-to-prove-it-will-not-harm-sea-life/
But all articles and replies can be summed up with this: their own pictures shows the problem. WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT THIS.
And if you don’t believe me, you can see it for yourself. Nearly 20 Velella in this one small area alone.

So...some people have been asking me to point out animals because they're having trouble seeing them. I went back to The Ocean Cleanup's website and the original image resolution has changed. Did they change it? You can find all my full-res images here: https://www.deepseanews.com/2019/10/the-ocean-cleanup-and-floating-marine-life/
Update! Thanks to all those who have helped me work through this. It's a difference in the download mechanism. So their original image is still available, and you can download it here using this orange box that is only visible for a few seconds on a laptop.
