方蘭was influenced by her mother 馮芝 who took her to anti-Japan rally in Hong Kong after Japanese occupation of Manchuria in 1931.

6 month after Japanese Surrender in Hong Kong, “Blackie” Lau 劉黑仔 (2nd from right) band of Communist guerrillas was attacked by KMT forces in Guangdong on May 1st, 1946. Lau died of infection from bullet wound.
Per agreement brokered by US envoy George Marshal btw KMT and Communist, 2583 men and women of Communist East River Column in Guangdong boarded American transport ship in Mirs Bay in Hong Kong to evacuate to Shandong Communist base on June 30th, 1946.
East River Column was made into Cantonese Column of PLA in Shandong province in 1947 during Chinese Civil War. 方蘭 worked Hong Kong underground til 1948.
