School toilets are a common concern for many children & parents. ‘Gender neutral’ sounds inclusive but in reality means mixed sex. This is exclusionary to those who want or need single sex, especially girls. Schools must provide single sex toilets http://bit.ly/2lM8KP0
SAFEGUARDING BBC Panorama revealed that reported sexual offences on school premises rose from 386 in 2013-14 to 922 in 2016-17 incl 225 reported rapes. Overall in the same time period in England/Wales assaults by <18s against <18s rose by 71% to 7,866. http://bbc.in/2lT3OaX
Converting toilet facilities to mixed sex will only allow further opportunity for such assaults to take place & schools may be in serious trouble should an assault take place in a mixed facility where appropriate safeguarding assessments have not been carried out.
RELIGION – some religions do not permit certain shared interactions between the sexes. To prevent access to single sex spaces required for religious reasons, undermines Equality Act guidance which states that both religion and sex are protected characteristics.
PRIVACY & DIGNITY single sex toilets & sinks are vital for girls dealing with menstruation. Periods can be messy so it's unacceptable for girls to share mixed washing facilities. 48% girls are embarrassed by periods & schools must ensure privacy to minimise period stigma.
HEALTH Any girl or boy too embarrassed to use mixed sex facilities at school is putting themselves at risk of dehydration & urinary tract infection. As in this school if mixed toilets make girls uncomfortable they will not use them. http://bit.ly/2kioRTR
