Hollywood has spent 50 yrs teaching us a story where ONE protagonist feels that the world is against him & must overcome a series of trials to show the world he's the one to save us/show us who's boss. The structures we've been taught don't feel natural to us because they aren't
Structure is radical. Not just in entertainment, but in how we think about things, how we spend our time, how we live our life. Structures dictate what satisfies. So if no one teaches us stories about the importance of community, the importance of love, the failings of violence
then we're going to be stuck in one story. The weird thing about this mono-structure is that it doesn't matter whether it's a hero or an anti-hero-- it's all the same. This structure is designed for you to exclusively have empathy with its primary journeyman(& it's usually a man)
so any new story with a new structure feels strange. Say it's about a group, a woman, a queer person, or it's about a tie, say it has an ambiguous ending where there is no death/catharsis - it will never satisfy the widest audience bc we haven't been taught to value other endings
This is terrifying to me. Because in order to confront the actual problems of the world, we desperately need new stories that don't rely on an Aristotelian or Cambellian or Hollywood framework. We need stories that teach us how to value listening, faith, cooperation & kindness.
