A friendly reminder that new teachers need our support, not our shame. A new teacher told me she cried this week—her first ever teaching—not for all the normal reasons to cry during the first week, but because she was shamed by her fellow teachers for not having read a book 1/
They said the book was a mainstay at the school. She said she hadn’t read it but would start immediately. They don’t teach the book until October. She was met with "jokes" from three different teachers: “Really?” and “Where did you go to school?” and “Everyone has read that!” 2/
The first two “jokes” are so unnecessary and the last one is literally always a lie. People on here and in real life are always so nice to me about my reading habits, but I LOVE telling people when I haven’t read a book, because debunking that myth is so important to me 3/
Say it with me: NO ONE HAS READ EVERYTHING! 4/
So, in solidarity with new teachers, here are some books I haven’t read. People can judge me for not having read them, but that will say more about them than it will about me 5/
And I would love if all my amazing teacher friends on here wanted to add a book at the end of this thread that they haven’t read so we could model honesty about our reading lives, and support our new teachers with truths and not lies 6/
TL;DR: Share the title of a book people think you should have read but you haven’t. RT to share with others. Let’s stop shaming teachers.

I’ve never read Jane Eyre. Or A Tale of Two Cities. Or any Harry Potter book. Or anything by David Foster Wallace. 7/
