My thesis:
‘Martin O’Neill had a bigger impact on Rangers than liquidation, tho both are linked’

An uncomfortable truth about the last 2 decades at the sharp end of Scottish football & relative success of Celtic & Rangers is that Martin O’Neill set targets Rangers cldn’t meet.
1)
The season before Martin O’Neill took charge Celtic lost the league by 21pts finishing on a points total of 69pts.

His first season he won the league by 15pts on a total of 97pts

A 36pt swing with a 28pt increase.
Now THAT’S how you close a gap.
2)
Before Martin O’Neill (3pts for a win was introduced 1994/95) from 1994/95 to 1999/2000 Celtic Averaged 71 points a season.
Rangers during this period had an average of 80pts.

On 2/6 seasons Celtic finished on 54pts & 69pts 😳.
3)
Reference for Gers fans is that 3 seasons since promotion Rangers have finished on 67, 70 & 78 (71pt average🤔)

The 5 seasons Martin O’Neill was boss Celtic upped their average from 71pts to 97pts per season.

During that time Rangers upped their average from 80pts to 87pts.
4)
This shows Celtic overtook Rangers by increasing performance not by waiting for Rangers to dip.
The Rangers average went UP.

THAT’S how you close a gap.

When Martin O’Neill came to Celtic, they had only won 1 title in 12 seasons, Rangers winning the other 11.
5)
In fact the 18 seasons before Martin O’Neill Celtic’s League placings are as follows:

1st x3
2nd x8
3rd x4
4th x2
5th x1

During/Since Martin O’Neill:
1st x14
2nd x5

When O’Neill arrived Rangers were on 49 league titles to Celtic’s 36, joint biggest gap there’s been (1965).
6)
The title count now is Rangers on 54 to Celtic’s 50.
(Apart from Celtic getting within 3, season 1987/88, this is the closest Celtic have got since 1937/38)

THAT’S how you close a gap.

Celtic have kept to a high standard since 2000/01.
7)
In the 19 seasons since Martin O’Neill arrived Celtic have averaged 91pts per season.

Celtic’s points average over the 5 titles they finished 2nd since 2000/01 is 88.8pts.

For this reason, anyone wishing to win the Scottish league will most likely have to get over 90pts.
8)
The 14 titles Celtic have won since Martin O’Neill, have been won by an average point winning margin of 16pts.
(15, 18, 17, 17, 11, 3, 20, 16, 29, 17, 15, 30, 9, 9)

The 5 Rangers won during this period were won by an average points winning margin of 2.5pts.
(GD, 1, 4, 6, 1)
9)
This highlights what is required and the struggle to match that consistency.

Rangers have only scored over 90pts three times in their history.

Since promotion Rangers haven’t broke the 80pts barrier and sticking on an extra 5 wins isn’t that simple.
10)
Celtic are a machine domestically, and it can all be traced back to Martin O’Neill and the staggering transformation in a very short period of time.

It won’t be popular, but to sustain that over 2 decades, the board have to take some credit.

(End...)
A wee extra bit to link O’Neill to Lennon. https://twitter.com/zeshankenzo/status/946724971144937472?s=21
