The fact that 25/30 of these 'greatest' innings were for or against Eng or Aus makes this list dubious. It also tells us how 'greatness' in a cricketing context tends to be so anglo centric. And how poor the other countries are in immortalising their own great innings. https://twitter.com/jonathanliew/status/1167349278202912770
It's one thing to play victim and say the English and Aussie press don't watch cricket elsewhere. But what are our own writers and historians doing? BCCI has actually LOST footage of Gavaskar's 10000th run (among other games). Easy to erase history. Harder to preserve it.
The other issue is this desperate need to be validated in Eng/Aus. Pujara is one of the greatest batsman in Asia. His hundreds in Colombo and Ranchi are stuff of legend. If an Eng or Aus batsman had such a home record we wouldn't have heard the end of it. Our response? Big deal
Eng and Aus don't look down upon winning at home. They take pride in it. Edgbaston is marketed as a 'fortress'. The Gabba goes by the 'Gabbatoir'. India have lost 4 home Tests this whole decade! It's taken some blinders to beat them. Does anyone care? Meh. Home-track bullies.
Look at whom India have lost to this decade. An all-time great Dale Steyn spell. A KP masterclass. A legendary Cook innings. And one of Steve Smith's greatest knocks. That's what it has taken to beat India at home. Where is the documentary on this Indian team? Where?
Just take this Eng win at Headingley. Has there been a big din about Eng winning without a Steve Smith Aus? Imagine if India had won this Test. Meh. They can't beat the best Aussie team. They can only win when Smith is not playing.
Keep looking down upon everything the team does. And you obviously won't celebrate their great moments and their great victories. You have no basis to complain when Eng and Aus writers leave them out of their lists. First look within.
PS: I merely used Jonathan Liew's list as an example to make the larger points. There have been several lists over the years (Wisden, CI etc) with a heavy tilt towards eng-aus related matches. I am more critical of the ecosystem that makes this happen than the individual takes
