Despite the proliferation of diversity and equity policies, the overall % of Māori academics employed at these 8 unis has changed very little over SIX YEARS (2/10).
Certain universities are doing better than others.
In terms of the overall % of Māori staff employed, Waikato has employed between 9 and 10% from 2012-2017 comparatively Lincoln employed between 2.4 and 5% . Other unis varied between 3-7% from 2012-2017 (3/10).

The previous graph shows that the vast majority of people who are employed by these institutions identify as “European” (4/10).
This is the number of Māori academics at each uni.
It lingers around 50 at ⅝ of the unis.

The majority of Māori academics are employed as lecturers, tutors and tutorial assistants.
As you more up the academic ladder to the professoriate level, Māori become fewer and fewer (6/10).

This data is reported by each of the universities themselves to the Ministry of Education and is available through Education Counts ( http://www.educationcounts.govt.nz/home ). All data was rounded up to 5 before we got it for privacy reasons (8/10).
This paper is a wero (challenge) for unis & the government to step up and make serious changes.
