When I Was Asleep, I was a Sheep

Now I'm Awake <---THREAD

Back when I was asleep, I thought surprising or shocking events that rocked our political, social and world systems were random, unplanned and uncoordinated.

2/ For instance, I thought Watergate was a "political scandal" that was dealt with by holding accountable those who would obstruct justice and abuse their power.

3/ Now I'm awake:

Turns out some men involved in Watergate were undercover operatives for the CIA and met shortly before the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

4/ When I was asleep, I thought the Korean & Viet Nam Wars were noble causes intent on stopping the spread of Communism in SouthEast Asia.

5/ Now I'm awake:

Turns out the CIA allegedly engaged in drug trafficking & arms dealing in the Korean conflict while conducting a "Secret War" in Laos from 1961 to 1975 where they were openly accused of trafficking heroin in the area then known as the Golden Triangle.

6/ When I was asleep, I thought 9/11 was solely a terrorist attack by Islamic terrorist group Al-Qaeda, zealous for their religion.

7/ Now I'm awake:

Turns out two days after 9/11, Saudi Arabia's influential ambassador to Washington, Prince Bandar bin Sultan, met with President Bush at the White House, and the two men smoked cigars on the Truman Balcony.

8/ When I was asleep, I thought The War in Afghanistan, the longest war in US history, was about driving the Taliban from power in order to deny al-Qaeda a safe base of operations.

9/ Now I'm awake:

Turns out, The Afghanistan War has involved American Troops protecting Afghan Opium--leading to the US Occupation resulting in all-time high Heroin production.
