Trauma is like Haunting Pain. It is profound pain that haunts an individual throughout their life. Spiritual Trauma is the result of profoundly painful experiences that go beyond psychological impact; to impacting/wounding the soul.
If trauma is a form of haunting pain, then traumatic triggers are what occurs when something related to said pain is re-experienced causing an individual to be reminded they are being haunted by a pain that will not leave them but has the power to terrorize at any moment.
Spiritual trauma often leads an individual to be tormented by trauma triggers related to spiritual activities & contexts that used to bless them. Certain worship songs, certain spaces (like corporate gatherings), even the Bible can become triggering & this is understandable.
When the church and/or spiritual activities & spaces have become triggering for someone due to spiritual trauma (especially spiritual abuse); guilting them into engaging such things only compounds trauma. Patience, understanding, love & care are proper responses...
The more I see my mentions as I speak abt such things, more energized I am for this writing protect I’ve begun. Lord willing, my first book will be on these issues. Laying out the realities of spiritual trauma & counsel towards healing. Such a neglected reality in the church.
