The e-Christian obsession with pagans is comparable to the Boomer obsession with the Soviet Union and the 3rd Reich - in both cases, a group longs for the days where their primary adversary fit more neatly into their worldview, and so they see this adversary in every shadow.
I initially was going to say that both "were an adversary they understood better," but at second blush, I doubt either have an accurate or in-depth understanding of their favorite opponent, they only think, or perhaps more accurately still, feel that they do.
Anyways, the appeal of both strawmen is that they fit the over-aching moral narratives: "Christians were oppressed by pagans, but gradually converted them all over time, lmao chop down sacred tree" and "America always fought tyrants, from George III, to Hitler, to Saddam."
The problem with both of these, however, is that most threatening enemies are those who differ from both groups in the manner opposite to the favored enemies.

Christianity is most threatened by those more ardently monotheist, or with fewer gods than us: atheists, Jews, Muslims.
Boomers' favorite freedoms are most threatened by those who are more liberal and open minded than they, not by those who advocate for more authoritarian and anti-capitalist statism. Antifa, far from being the real fascists, are anarchists.
Thus we have it that Christians are more similar to the pagans than are the real threats to our faith, and Boomers are more fascist than the liberals they oppose. Failure to recognize these facts leads to such absurdities as "Atheism is actually pagan," and Dinesh D'Souza.
