I walked away from the @WomenInCogSci panel with lots of hot tips on inclusivity in research & teaching/mentoring. I've compiled a list (+ some increasingly terrible hashtags) but please add more! #CogSci2019
@NSF funding will cover salaries for project support personnel needed during maternity/childcare leave. #HireAway
@NSERC_CRSNG @SSHRC_CRSH & @CIHR_IRSC funding will cover childcare costs during travel. #BabyOnBoard
Let your students be heard! Start term with students filling out "I want you to know this about me" (optionally anonymous). They can tell you what else they have on their plate or tell you their preferred pronoun in a low stress way. #SquadGoals
Speaking of pronouns! End emails with your preferred pronoun and an educational link to pronoun usage info. This helps normalize it and helps folks learn that (GASP!) not everyone uses he/she. #BYEnary
Last note on this. Be more gender inclusive when naming women’s groups etc. Consider something like GENDER MINORITIES. #MakeTheyWhileTheSunShines
Add QR codes to posters & first slides. This makes your research accessible for those who need a different way to view it #TheFutureIsNow
Make it clear in the syllabus that you understand that LIFE HAPPENS. Show some flexibility for students’ struggles and help normalize mental health issues. #FlexYourselfBeforeYouWrecksYourself
Speak up for researchers/mentees who are quiet. A big part of research is self-promotion, but for a ton of intersectional reasons NOT EVERYONE IS GOOD AT SELF-PROMOTION. #ShoutItFromTheMountainPlots
You know those unspoken rules for getting into grad school? FIRST GEN STUDENTS DON’T! Create a doc with all the things you thought were obvious & make it accessible to all undergrads. Or at least point them in the direction of resources. #CheckYourPrivilege #ThenDocumentIt
Finally, can we all agree to start researching non-WEIRD populations? Thank you and good night.
