Australian points-based system = major red herring

We already have a points-based system, it was implemented in 2008, and bc it didn't work properly we have been adjusting the immigration system ever since. The MAC already has multiple reports on this.

The real reason Johnson is talking about it is this:
It is a great soundbite.

Australian system sounds, white, controlled and high skilled.
But it leaves out that Australia has more than just the points-based system to manage immigration. https://twitter.com/HenryNewman/status/1154342568274071552
AUS has double the # of immigrants proportionally to the UK - businesses are more than happy if we change our immigration objective to a more open one like the Australian system. Businesses are facing major skills and labour gaps and immigration would be a helpful step short term
If you want to find out how the Australian system and some of the other immigration systems of major economies around the world work in detail - you can have a read in the Global Britain report, which also sets out what we can learn from their systems

@ColinYeo1: "It is not entirely clear Johnson has a clue how any such system would be designed. He describes his points-based ideal as one where foreigners “must have a job before they arrive”. This is precisely the opposite of how it works in Australia https://twitter.com/ColinYeo1/status/1153645716784472065
