Long meeting with a 17 yr old foster kid today, and I discovered some interesting themes that run through too many of these conversations.

"It's not my fault." No, but it's not mine either. Shit happens, and you deal with it and move on.

"You have to respect me." No; I don't. I'm willing to learn to do so, but that's up to you. Right now you're just another kid one week shy of being 18 who thinks he's owed.
3/

"You had it easy compared to me." No; I didn't. Most people my age didn't. Some of us got lucky, and some made our own luck, and some are still trying. I work every day, but I found work I like to do.
4/

"The system is rigged." Some of it is; some isn't. Some people have to work harder, which is why you need to find what you like and manage your short term expectations.
5/

"You don't understand what I've gone through." I don't, but I'm willing to learn and almost nobody else gives a shit. But you can live in your past or build you future one step at a time. There are no shortcuts for you.

I'm here because I thought I could help. I'll be honest and blunt. I'll spend personal time helping, but it's all up to you what happens from my effort. You have to put in the time, and realize that very soon your free ride is over because society says you're on your own.
