The person who celebrates the USA with no questions asked is not more patriotic than the person who expresses disappointment and asks hard questions of their country.

It’s easy to be a mix of beer and flag and fireworks. It’s harder to mourn and fight for change.
And the two examples are not mutually exclusive. You can mourn and celebrate on the same day. You can also sit the whole thing out and just watch Stranger Things.

Whatever you feel today is valid.

Whatever you need today is okay.
You can call bullshit on the macho tank party in Washington while feeling awe and wonder for the fireworks in your hometown.

You can hold a sparkler while feeling heartbroken over the situation at the border.

Today can be absolutely whatever you need it to be.
