đŸ”„Kumar is gonna make me do a quick thread about Water War and Rare Earth Mineral War... its also about India...
In 2017 there was a military standoff b/w China and India, in a region called Doklam (India)
It started that June...Chinese were building a road thru disputed land.. https://twitter.com/datarade/status/1141931916133691392
China/India/Bhutan. It got fixed quickly as an agmt was done by all sides, India removed its troops
But... China stared fighting its war in a new war, by using "water data" of the Brahmaputra River
That data is crucial! The river starts in Tibet..then goes to India and China, then Bangladesh. The data is needed for flood forecasts.
Most countries that share those issues have a "water treaty"...like
..the water management of Nile/Mekong/ etc. But, china is ALWAYS belligerent..and in rural area of Tibet they started building a series of hydropower dams... this is war, why..because...
In 2000, there was a flood in Arunachal/Pradesh/Assam = +/- 25 ppl died
At that time India said the worst part of the damage could have been mitigated if China had "shared data" about the upstream river conditions.
https://www.thehindu.com/2000/11/04/stories/05042524.htm
After that, China agreed to share hydrological data w/India between May and October of every year, the "flood season"
They also on an annual working group to discuss river/issues.
Why are we discussing this, Kumar said "rare earth minerals". Its cos China never de-escalates "war".
Examples...In 2010 there was incident in East China Sea with Japan...China then put restrictions on exporting its rare earth mineral exports to Japan
https://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/23/business/global/23rare.html?mcubz=0
Another example? Okay... Since 2016's Presidential election win by Tsai Ing-wen, China viewed this as a threat because of her cozyness with Trump. So, Xi/CCP/China restricted Chinese tourism to Taiwan, even for Chinese living abroad/outside of China. https://www.upi.com/Top_News/World-News/2016/02/23/China-restricting-tourism-to-Taiwan-after-elections/1471456255035/
So, putting it all together. China doesn't de-escalate conflict, its neighbors are constantly reminded of this.
