THREAD #YuvrajSingh #ThankYouYuvi #ThankYouYuvraj
Any number of tweets will prove insufficient when trying to understand the impact that Yuvraj Singh had on Ind cricket... on the 10 others who took the field with him + the many on the outside- coaches, admins etc. or just fans.
This thread is a simple attempt to capture all his centuries in Tests, ODIs as well as best bowling efforts in these two formats.
Here we go then, chronologically. First, the ODI batting ...
102* (85) v Ban at Dhaka, Apr '03
It contributed to a massive 200 run win. 4 sixes, 9 fours. He shepherded the middle, lower order expertly as wickets fell all around him. It was his 71st ODI, already but the wait was worth it.
139 (122) v Aus at Sydney, Jan '04
A partnership with VVS (106 runs) for the ages in the VB series. 16 fours, 2 sixes and 22 amazing runs off Ian Harvey in the 49th over.
Alas, India lost while defending 296/4. :(
110 (114) v WI at Colombo, Aug '05
Coming in at 51/3, the young firm of Kaif+Yuvi made it big to take Ind to a winning total of 262/4 and into the final of the tournament. 11 fours, 1 six to come back into form.
120 (124) v Zim at Harare, Sep '05
Combining forces with Dhoni to chase down 250 after a disastrous top order effort. 12 fours, 1 six in an exceptionally well paced innings.
103 (122) v SA at Hyderabad, Nov '05
10 fours, 3 sixes in a loss for Ind. :( Another terrible effort by the top order. One pulled six off Ntini and one six over long on to Kallis were delicious!
107* (93) v Pak at Karachi, Feb '06
14 fours as the Yuvi-Dhoni combo chased down 286 like it was child's play against Sami, Asif among others. He was in scintillating form throughout this marquee series.
103 (76) v Eng at Margao, Apr '06
10 fours, 3 sixes on a sluggish pitch where everyone else seemed to struggle! Ind won mainly due to his masterful knock,
121 (115) v Aus at Hyd, Oct '07
12 fours, 3 sixes but Ind lost once again since no one else offered support in a steep chase of 291. The next highest scores for Ind were 43, 33.
138* (78) v Eng at Rajkot, Nov '08
16 fours, 6 sixes and an easy Ind win. What more did he ever want! It was just one of those mad days when Yuvi showed the world a glimpse of what he is capable of. And what's more, he did it all with an injured back!
118 (122) v Eng at Indore, Nov '08
15 fours, 2 sixes. Another Indian win. And guess what, bowling figures that read 10-0-28-4.
On days like these, it was as if he could do just about anything on the cricket field. Champion!
117 (95) v SL at Colombo, Feb 2009
17 fours, 1 six in a comprehensive Ind win. The partnership with Sehwag (116 runs) was so menacing that the SL bowlers had no answers.
131 (102) v WI at Kingston, Jun '09
10 fours and an astonishing 7 sixes for Ind to win comfortably. Slow pitch and slow outfield, no problem.
113 (123) v WI at Chennai, Mar '11 (ODI WC)
10 fours, 2 sixes and a long battle against dehydration, vomiting on the field. And to back it up with 2 wickets later. And to be fighting cancer at the same time. CWC 2011 was Yuvraj's all the way.
150 (127) v Eng at Cuttack, Jan '17
"After all this time?" ... "Always."
21 fours, 3 sixes. Rolling back the years to crush Eng with Dhoni as both scored centuries. One suspected the end was year but the last full flicker was so lovingly bright!
Now the test matches,
112 v Pak at Lahore, Apr '04 in the 1st innings
15 fours, 2 sixes. Counterattacking brilliance after coming in at 94/4. Ind lost the test but a star was born only to remain unfulfilled in this arena.
122 v Pak at Karachi, Jan-Feb '06 in the 2nd innings
19 fours, 1 six. A lone hand by Yuvi once again as Ind failed completely in an impossible chase of 607. He showed the others it could be done and how!
169 v Pak at Bengaluru, Dec '07 in the 1st innings
28 fours, 1 six in a high scoring drawn match. The partnership with Ganguly after they got together at 61/4 was a delight for those who like to watch two different but equally stylish left handed batsmen go about their business
On to ODI bowling now.
4/6 v Nam at Pietermaritzburg, Feb '03 (CWC '03)
These were the last 4 wkts to fall for Nam as they were all out chasing a huge Ind score. Yuvi showd us that he always had it in him to become a world class spinner!
4/28 v Eng at Indore, Nov '08
He had already scored a century earlier. With Eng needing 110 off 13 overs, Yuvi dismissed the two dangermen, Flintoff and Pietersen in the space of four balls to turn the match into Ind's favour!
5/31 v Ire at Bengaluru, Mar '11 (CWC '11)
The "pie chucker" takes 5 and then also scores a 50* to take his team to a win on a sluggish pitch. The flight he deployed to deceive the Irish would have been the envy of many regular left arm slow bowlers too!
