If you'd like to see some of the damage that Nicola Sturgeon's 'judge me on my record' speech did to Scottish education, look no further than the utterly embarrassing reaction to Jo Swinson's point about the inequalities behind university access in the country.
Me, screaming, into the void:
"We're going to close the gap between rich and poor students."
"You know there's a major disparity in university access between those students?"
"StOp TaLkInG sCoTlAnD dOwN yOu TrEaChErOuS yOoN!!!!!"
"You know there's a major disparity in university access between those students?"
"StOp TaLkInG sCoTlAnD dOwN yOu TrEaChErOuS yOoN!!!!!"
And of course now all that matters to the ultras, the zoomers, and a worrying number of MPs/MPSs/councillors (some of whom admittedly fall into those earlier categories) is "JONSWINSONLIEDABOUTGOVAN!!!!!" - which she didn't.
That the instinctive reaction of so many in the SNP was to shout and scream and deflect is quite instructive, I think. There's the obvious lack of knowledge, but the lack of confidence is more interesting.
But the main thing here is that education is now *primarily* a political issue in Scotland, and that's really, really dangerous.
A few things: Swinson's 80% figure is not correct and her actual point was vague, wishy-washy rubbish. But the core point, and the 4% figure that people are attacking, are correct.
And whatever you way cut it, the SNP response (at all levels) has been embarrassing.
