At 1:34 Cotton talks about eastern Arkansas having one of the biggest steel production areas in the country.
Now, you may have read about Russian oligarchs like Roman Abramovich buying up American steel mills, so my curiosity was aroused. https://twitter.com/CBSThisMorning/status/1127928107279749120

Steel mills in eastern Arkansas include
Big River Steel
Nucor
Paco Steel
Prospect Steel
Southwest Steel Processing
To address this question, letā€™s take a peek at the New York Times story that Arkansas Times references. https://twitter.com/quarkside/status/1128163683375484929?s=21
The loan is from KfW IPEX-Bank and it is backed by the German equivalent of Americaā€™s Ex-Im Bank, which the Koch Brothers eschew, along with ā€œcorporate welfareā€ ā€” when their interests are not involved.
This provides an excellent example of #GOPcrisy.

Went over to Big River Steel, and find they are home to ā€œrebelsā€.
This seems a bit like a dog whistle to me, but then again Iā€™ve never been a fan of the Confederacy or white supremacists who continue to fight the Civil War 150 years later.

So yadda yadda...letā€™s get to the Russian oligarchs already.
9šŸ§µ
In 2003, David Stickler, then at Global Capital Partners, brought together John Correnti & Alexey Mordashov, who at the time, was Russiaā€™s ninth richest man, to build the first American steel mill in six years, in Columbus, Mississippi.

Alexey Mordashov has all the trappings befitting a respectable Russian billionaire, including the model wife and naturally, a very impressive yacht.

But whoa Nelly, Iā€™m getting ahead of myself. Letā€™s call that foreshadowing.

Back in 2007, at the Columbus, MS plant, Russian investors bought out the managment team, including Correnti, and SeverCorr became Severstal Columbus.

14. Only a few months after the plant was completed. ā€œRussia's Severstal, once a major dumper of below-cost steel in the United States, has ponied up big bucks to help Correnti, a long-time steel executive, realize his vision.ā€

So that is where Correnti got the money to start Big River Steel, from the Russian oligarch. It looks like he moved on with David Stickler of Global Principal Partners, who introduced him to Mordashov in the first place.
Stickler is now BSRā€™s CEO.

16šŸ§µ
Because *somebody* had to step up and fill those CEO shoes at BRS when Mr. Correnti very sadly died on a business trip to Chicago, before they had even got the plant in Osceola going.

RIP
17šŸ§µ
Correnti was in Chicago for meeting of Navistarā€™s board of directors on Tuesday August 18, 2015 when he died at age 68 ā€œapparentlyā€ of natural causes, although ā€œthe cause of death was not immediately known,ā€ even when NYT reported 3 days later.

Looking at steel in eastern Arkansas, it didnā€™t take long to find a steelmaker with long-established ties to sanctioned oligarchs, David Sticker of a Miami-based investment firm, AND Koch Minerals, all in one neat package.
https://www.amm.com/Article/3842668/Exclusive-Big-River-to-stay-independentCEO.html
20šŸ§µ
And yes, BRS did LEED certified construction, so it is a nice facility and thatā€™s great & ground-breaking.

But really, how can we ever forget that the Koch father made the family fortune building steel mills for Stalin?
https://www.npr.org/2016/01/19/463565987/hidden-history-of-koch-brothers-traces-their-childhood-and-political-rise
21šŸ§µ
And here we find the Koch Brothers, despite their alleged dislike of ā€œcorporate welfareā€ sucking, if you will pardon the expression, at the governmentā€™s tit?

Oligarchs gotta oligarch.

Thus, we come to realize that tariffs on Chinese goods is a scheme at taxpayer expense.
Itā€™s obvious, @SenTomCotton, that the steel industry is writing the rules and making the rest of the nation pay for their profits. You guys with your corruption make Teapot Dome look like a walk in the park. Nucor, too, is in eastern Arkansas.
