Slide 27: 6./IR724 shoots 50 (fifty) hostages in Serbia because one of its soldiers was wounded by a headshot.
Slide 28/29: Starodub rear sector. After an attack on a patrol in which 3 soldiers were executed, I./AR156, 56. Infanteriedivision, ‘clears’ a village with a number of dispersed Red Army soldiers and where both soldiers and civilians had engaged the patrol http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Gliederungen/ArtReg/AR156-R.htm
Orders are to kill everyone. 68 men and 60 women are duly executed. It is then noted that the 60 children with an average age 2-10 could not be left to themselves. So the German gunners shot them all too. I presume older children were considered adults. http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Gliederungen/Infanteriedivisionen/56ID-R.htm
The battery commander Hauptmann Friedmann signed the report. The handwritten note states that the divisional commander, General Karl von Oven, endorsed the actions by the Battery.
Von Oven died in 1974 and as far as I can see was never prosecuted. http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Personenregister/O/OvenKarlv.htm
Hauptmann Theodor Friedmann died shortly after, during the winter battles. He had received the German Cross in Gold on 30 November, showing that shooting 60 children would not make you ineligible for decorations in the Wehrmacht. https://www.tracesofwar.com/persons/4662/Friedmann-Theodor.htm
None of this is a surprise to me, by the way.
So the next time someone comes along and tells you that the ‘normal’ Wehrmacht was clean and not involved in the nastiness of the Nazis and the SS you can tell them to go and well and truly fuck themselves.
