Most people run to get in shape, they should be getting in shape to run.

Let's talk about cardio, because every high school team in America is fucking this up

And you probably are too.
First of all you need to be doing cardio.

Cardiovascular health is incredibly important and overlooked by most gym bros like myself.
However, running is automatically what comes to mind when we think about cardio.

Problem: running is incredibly dangerous.
A lot of people run to get in shape, but they should be getting in shape to run.

Running causes roughly 180 ground contacts per minute, with upward forces near 3x your bodyweight.

Your skeletal & muscular system needs to be prepared for this kind of stress.
If ones body is prepared for that kind of stress and their running for is good, running is fine.

But I've seen very few people with good running form.

Also let's not forget that running does not encourage muscle or strength growth.

It's actually the OPPOSITE!

You lose gains.
So what is cardio??

At the core of it, running is elevating our heart rate for an extended period of time.

That's really it.

That's the important thing we are trying to achieve.

Elevate the heart rate. Keep it elevated.
So understanding this, in confused as to why high school coaches and personal trainers still have people running.
Instead, they should be doing things like burpees, tire flips, sledge hammers, farmer carried, sled pushes and pulls, yoke carries, etc...
All of these exercises ELEVATE the heart rate

But the secret sauce is

THEY ALSO ENCOURAGE MUSCLE AND STRENGTH GROWTH.

Huge point 👆🏽👆🏽
You'll hear coaches say some bullshit like.. well a 2mile run forces the athlete to have grit and to struggle.

Meanwhile, 20min of burpees is not an easy task and achieves the same "grit" experience.
So basically this is just an anti running thread.

Not because I'm against running but because it is counterintuitive for most athletes.

I routinely see my friends lose 20-40lb and tons of strength every athletic season.

All because coaches are dumbasses
If running is your goal.. then run.

If cardio is the goal.. find ways to do cardio that don't work against your athletic goals.

Find ways to do cardio, while gaining strength.
ALSO forgot to add.

Sprinting can be a crazy good leg builder.

You should be sprinting.

I should be sprinting.
I was a distance runner for 6yrs.

I love running so no bias per se.

Look at the top distance running athletes. They are all skinny and small.

There's a reason for that.

That's not how you want your football or baseball athlete looking, so why would a coach train them that way
