I have been “watching” the issue of rising white supremacy for at least a year now. I feel it is my responsibility as a human, an American, and as a Jew to pay attention. I try to read different perspectives. /1 #StrongerThanHate #WelcomeTheStranger

Perhaps it should be an easy, black & white thing: “nazis are bad!” Yet as we are finally seeing, there is a complex web of hate that criss-crosses through nationalities, races & religions. #StrongerThanHate #WelcomeTheStranger

Based on social media threads, it seems there is some room to know more about the different “factions” that are at play here. It can be so easy to get entrenched in our position, to get so attached to our perspective, that it is challenging to acknowledge new information.

I thought that by simplifying my understanding of it, it might help with seeing just how pervasive this problem of “hate” - or ‘othering’ - really is. So here goes.

Christians hate Islamists

So how do we figure out how to get along, to move past the tragic cycle of violence, to stop burying children & to start celebrating our shared humanity?
We have to be willing to engage, to listen, to share our stories.

We have to be willing to engage, to listen, to share our stories.

What most Americans don’t know is that thousands of Jewish Israelis, Arab Israelis & Palestinians have been engaging in exactly this kind of dialogue & sharing for years.
They have braved checkpoints & stigma to talk face to face, over & over again.

They have braved checkpoints & stigma to talk face to face, over & over again.

MSM doesn’t show you this. We are only shown the violence & bloodshed. But there is much more to the story. I know b/c I saw it with my own eyes. There are groups that have worked tirelessly for decades to avoid demonizing the other.
/9

They give a story & a face to the person they are supposed to hate. And then they laugh, & cry, & hug b/c our shared humanity always triumphs over hate. If Jews & Palestinians can play soccer together, do theater, work side by side to save the environment,

As important as it is to name & expose the ugly facts of hate, we need to be careful that we do not become unwitting instruments of hate ourselves. Ex: the student who approached Chelsea Clinton did so in a *hateful* way. This is why she has been so heavily criticized.
/11

Hate feeds on itself. As important as it is to understand what & who hate groups are & how they operate, we need to be very cautious that we are not giving them *any* airtime. If there is an opportunity to build a bridge, build it. Peace
