And I suppose I should clarify. We need to start looking at concepts like “conservatism” and “political” outside of the lens of partisan and electoral politics.
There’s too much conflation there

Thread:

Typically when someone says conservative, ppl assume republican/GOP.
When someone says political, ppl assume you mean voting or calling a senator.
We need to remove that assumption, because well meaning ideas and activism are ruined when conservatives get involved.

At its most basic level, “conservative” means traditional or old fashioned. it doesn’t necessarily mean a republican.
Political means how you relate to your in-groups. You can be political in your book club, even if you don’t vote for potus
Why do these distinctions matter?

Bc we give people passes, and let them into movements because they don’t align with the opposition... based on concepts of electoral politics
It happens time after time with leftist groups. The extent of vetting is “oh you hate the gop, too? You’re in”
This leads to failure.

Ask questions first.
Do you support reproductive rights? Do you support the lgtbq community? How do you feel about racism?
Etc etc. plenty of Ppl who are electorally apolitical, or are opposed to the GOP hold incredibly conservative views on these topics.
As a result-

When they get into lefty spaces, they use their conservatism to push politics. Eventually groups are ended because you conservative and progressive values are not compatible
Proper vetting would eliminate this,

but Bc we only see concepts like ‘political’ & ‘conservative’ thru an electoral politics lens, we don’t ask the right questions
And we end up with conservatives that kill our movements, because we just assume anyone who’s apolitical and doesn’t support the gop must be a leftist

It takes more than not liking the gop to make you a progressive person. It takes more than a voting record (or lack thereof) to tell me your true politics.
So maybe stop framing everything from an electoral, partisan based POV.

And this isn’t shade, this is an observation. I’ve seen it happen before. I’m sure it will happen again.
Just recognize people can have conservative ideas without voting for the gop. And they bring those ideas with them everywhere they go, including lefty spaces.
