A child cycling to school on her own. 👇

Can't see her? Look closer. She's on the right-hand side, behind the bus that's stopped in the painted cycle lane.

She crosses the road, leaving the useless eastbound bike lane, in order to avoid the ugly, hostile, car-clogged #DeaneRAB.
Fluorescent fabric and polystyrene hats don't make the built environment any safer or more accessible for children walking and cycling to school.

Why do you suppose that might be the case, @RSAIreland?
@RSAIreland @RSADrivingTest @BlathnaidT @SimonDelaneyEsq @EcoEye @RTEOne @CTribune @galwayad What would make the biggest and most sustainable difference to the safety of vulnerable road users here?

More hi-viz & helmets?
More "education"?
Or a more conducive built environment?
A sign in the background exhorts citizens to "take a walk on the west side", placed there by @GalwayCityCo as part of its "strategy" to "encourage" active travel.

The #DeaneRAB has no pedestrian crossings. There is no safe #Space4Cycling. Traffic flow is not controlled.

@GTU_Galway declared that cycle facilities would be provided on Bishop O'Donnell Road.

In 2016.

The "€200m" #GalwayTransportStrategy was launched the same year.
Drivers sitting in their comfy boxes, chatting on mobile phones, smoking, enjoying in-car entertainment, applying make-up, reading, shaving, brushing their teeth, eating -- all of this can be observed in #GalwayCityOfCarCulture.

And motorists' biggest complaint?

Traffic.
Children and adults travelling by bike are forced to adapt to motor traffic in whatever way they can.

Which mode of transport is wasting space? Which one is polluting the air? Which one is adding to #ClimateBreakdown?

And which one is @TFIupdates prioritising, @dermotog?
We already know the answer. The official position of @TFIupdates, as stated on the record & as hard-wired into their Transport Model, is expressed in two conceits:

• Cycle infrastructure "reduces road capacity"

• Drivers must be "compensated" for measures that enable cycling.
