Thread.
I've tweeted this story before, but it bears repeating given the current Kashmir situation.
A relative of mine served in the army and was posted there around 1984-86 or so, just before he was shipped off to Sri Lanka for IPKF. And he would tell this story proudly.
This was before insurgency erupted in Kashmir. But he still called it Sri Narak (hell) instead of Srinagar when talking to us.
The story is, they were playing a "friendly" hockey match with the Pak army at the LOC. A bunch of young boys, teens&early 20s from Srinagar turned up.
These boys, who stayed on the Indian side, were loudly cheering the Pak team during the match. Eventually the Pak team won. The Indian army team made nice with the Pak army, posed for photos etc, but were very upset at losing.
When the soldiers were driving back to their camp, they saw a bunch of those boys who had cheered and celebrated the Pak victory. They stopped the truck, got down, and angrily thrashed the boys with their hockey sticks for being "disloyal".
He used to tell this story proudly.
Even as a kid, I found the story horrifying and could not make sense of it. These professional soldiers beat up a bunch of boys for cheering the other side? What exactly did they hope to achieve? Beat love for India into them? Wouldn't it have the exact opposite effect?
This is the kind of humiliating and de-humanizing life that Kashmiris have led for over 3 decades under perpetual military occupation. Mainland Indians never think about the issue from their side. And the hate and vilification of Kashmiri Muslims has just gotten worse now.
Shakespeare said it best
"If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die? And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge? If we are like you in the rest, we will resemble you in that."
