And now, a thread of Doctor Who stories that I think would work better with different incarnations.
TOOTH AND CLAW
A great premise and horror vibe, but the sheer smugness of the Tenth Doctor and Rose is particularly irritating. Stop giggling about how you've found a werewolf and actually stop the fucker, Jesus Christ.
I'd give it to either the Third or Fourth Doctor, and Sarah.
UNDER THE LAKE/BEFORE THE FLOOD
Another great horror story, but it feels odd sat in the Twelfth Doctor's carefree rockstar phase. I think it requires a more sincere incarnation at the helm (perhaps Seven and Ace?), or maybe just to be bumped earlier into Twelve's sterner days.
THE SAVAGES
I've always thought that this story feels like a proto-Second Doctor adventure. This may be because of the themes of possession and mind alteration, which later became very prevalent in the Second Doctor's early outings with Jamie, Ben and Polly.
THE IDIOT'S LANTERN
Apparently this story was originally written for the Ninth Doctor, and it really shows, what with the Tenth Doctor being unusually fierce multiple times. It just feels a tad out of character.
Who knows, maybe the Ninth Doctor would've saved it from being dull.
ARC OF INFINITY
The point where the Fifth Doctor was at his most passive, and as a result it's very dull. Remember when the Fourth Doctor could confidently stroll around Gallifrey and wriggle out of trouble by offering jelly babies? That would be appreciated in this story.
THE VAMPIRES OF VENICE
It is a good one, but every time I watch it I just feel like it's a bit... well, generic. Perhaps a different Doctor would improve that - a louder, more gravitational one. I'm picturing it with the Fourth Doctor and Romana.
THE CELESTIAL TOYMAKER
Another later First Doctor story that I think would be much better with the Second. Plus I would have Jamie and Zoe take Steven and Dodo's places.
Or, since his forte is fighting against godlike beings, maybe the Seventh Doctor could play the Trilogic game?
THE GIRL IN THE FIREPLACE
I know the Tenth Doctor was one of the horny ones, but I don't really buy his romantic chemistry with Madame de Pompadour. Might be because he doesn't seem dignified enough, I dunno.
I think the Eighth Doctor could pull it off to greater success.
THE BELLS OF SAINT JOHN
Thematically a clone of The Idiot's Lantern, it's unsurprising that it too could be better with a different incarnation.
I've always got some serious Seventh Doctor and Ace vibes from this one, but I'm unsure why. Ah well, it's probably still work well.
THE RETURN OF DOCTOR MYSTERIO
Mostly because I just don't think the Twelfth Doctor - even when he's at his least serious - works well with material this whimsical. In an ideal world, if I simply HAD to put this story on TV, I'd throw it in the direction of the Eleventh Doctor.
