jfc i never realized that the aviator's cinematography is meant to replicate two-strip technicolor. i used to watch it *all the time* but hadn't seen it in many years so i'll blame that. doing 1930 i fell in love w/ the reds & greens of two-strip. it's sublime. so striking in TA
DiCaprio's face has never been used better than in The Aviator. Scorsese/Richardson exploit his boy visage to striking effect, showing the childlike frayed nerves creeping through underneath his genius. this has always been my favorite shot of the film. it startles every time
equally startling re: how his boyishness is used is this being *the* turning point of DiCaprio's career, his post-Titanic comeback complete, announcing himself as here to stay & capable of greatness in adult parts, in a role that *uses* what he's trying to shake off w/ this film
