This thread has tips designed to encourage people who want to be television screenwriters but think they might not have access to the tools and resources.
1. Did you know many production companies accept unsolicited scripts? One of my favourite parts of my job is reading our unsolicited scripts file. Try googling to find out which companies are interested in talking to emerging writers.
2. It's important to correctly format your script- a word document will make you look under prepared. You may not be able to afford Final Draft but why not try Celtx? Celtx produces industry standard .pdf documents and is free.
3. So you know what you want to write and you're using the right software now here is a list of tips that will have your formatting flawless and allow anyone reading your script to concentrate on your story and not be distracted by anything else.
4. So you've written your script, it's correctly formatted and presented alongside industry standards- it's time to approach production companies. Take your time drafting your email. Be brief, polite and professional. Make these people want to read your work.
5. If you've done all of this and still get told 'no thanks' try not to give up. I'm always criticising them but the BBC's Writers Room is an invaluable resource. They even have a script library of shows that are on air now http://www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom
other than running amok in these twitter streets, my job is in scripted development. the lack of diversity on screen is a direct reflection of the lack of diversity in the scripts commissioners read. i want to encourage more underrepresented voices to write and get involved.
okay lads, please share with your screenwriting mates and let’s equip the next generation of writers cos i am bored of seeing the same thing written by the same people on my telly every week.
friends, do not rush. take your time making your work the best it can be. nothing that’s for you will pass you by so take that little bit of extra time before sending out your scripts and make sure they are correctly

1) laid out
2) formatted
3) spelt

you can do it!
hiya, off the back of this thread two writers have sent me scripts that are *incorrectly formatted*. they didn’t take any time to apply any of the tips outlined above.
