My 2019 reading challenge is going to be 'Clear the Shelves' aka all the books I have in my kindle app and house that I haven't read yet. I'm excited.
Starting with Kindle App books
Book 1 (bc there's a slim chance I'm finishing this book before the year ends)
I finished it so it doesn't count lol It's third in a series about a girl who gets a time travel gene and has to alter timelines to stop her evil grandfather from wiping out most of humanity with a virus. It starts getting confusing with the time travel tbh but pretty good.
Actual book #1
I stopped reading bc it was boring and he was talking down on Nat Turner and Maroons. What in the Black bourgeoisie hell
Actual actual book #1
First book was good. A 60s/70s coming of age story with a young Black girl trying to find herself and her identity, define her Blackness and her sexuality. There was a lot of things that had me thinking about how we learn gender. Some parts around plot movement were awk
Book #2
Wasn't really a full length book, so I kind of cheated. But it said a lot of things I needed to hear.
Book 3
I didn't finish A brief history of 7 killings, so actual book #3
Fave quote: "to have been loved so deeply, even though the person who loved us is gone, will give us some protection forever"
Book #4. I've been binge reading this book. Auntie romance book. Woman decides, at 54 to hit up all the men she's ever loved. From back in college days to present. Had me like hmmm. Lol I would never but had me thinking about love and time.
Fave Quote
Finally finished a fucking book after putting a few down. Here's #5
Fave quote: "It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities."
#6. This book is soooooo good. Couldn't put it down. Middle grades book about a middle school spiritual medium fighting evil spirits. Talk about a book a Black bruja like myself needed as a kid. And she (half Korean child) has a Jamaican best friend who's mama feeds her callaloo
Fave quote. Lol that Black/Asian solidarity strong. Also similarities across cultures of people of color.
Book 7. Nothing like the movie.
There was a lot of technical stuff that made it very dense to read. But the premise, situating them as the norm, part of a community, instead of like tokens like the movie did, was much appreciated.
Book 8.
Really liked the ending.
