The UK employing the wrong strategy. Might want to rethink considering the UK population is ageing. Around 18.2% of the UK population were aged 65 years or over at mid-2017, compared with 15.9% in 2007; this is projected to grow to 20.7% by 2027.
I know it’s hard to imagine with the way immigrants are being viewed today, but within a few decades, talent and manpower will be very much competed over - so much so that countries will vie with each other to attract enough people to come.
Those countries that thought ahead will have an advantage over those that didn’t. When the Chinese migrated to the US, they were encouraged and reassured by the already established communities there.
Those who wanted to find their feet in a strange land were helped by the Chinese associations set up in Chinatowns. Establish the migrant communities with a plan to attract the future workforce from their original countries.
Help them prosper with ease of establishing businesses, good schools for their children, etc. What’s underrated is the fact that the destination country has to have a welcoming environment. Case and point, the UK has recently seen the departure of EU workers in droves.
Many are deterred from coming as well. Demographics has very long lead times and decisions now will determine whether a country will be on the wrong or the right side of demographic change decades from now. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/aug/23/net-migration-from-eu-to-uk-at-lowest-level-since-december-2012
Unless there is a magic wand to reverse the population ageing or encourage the population to have more kids, this is the only solution. That, and robots.
