As #Hindu communities around the world celebrate the Festival of Light, I'm reflecting on what the @RoyalNavy has taught me about the meaning and value of #Diwali
#Diwali is about the victory of good over evil, of light over darkness. But of course Rama's defeat of Ravana was celebrated at Vijay Dashmi, a few weeks ago. So what's Diwali all about?
After long years away from home, undertaking development & humanitarian work in tribal communities, assisting the poor & vulnerable, & protecting the people of his own Kingdom & of Lanka, by defeating the evil Ravana, Lord Rama, with his great Army, returned home to Ayodhya...
...where family, friends & the entire Kingdom celebrated their safe return, welcoming them home with open arms & love in their hearts. Now that's something every @RoyalNavy family can relate to: the safe return of a sailor after a long deployment, back to their loved ones.
So #Diwali has a special significance for us as @RoyalNavy #Hindus. After all the adventures, the 'runs ashore', & protecting the nation's interests around the world, family are the light in our lives. Coming back to family & friends is the true victory of light over darkness.
So a very Happy Diwali to all, in particular those who miss being with their loved ones today, so that you can celebrate in safety & peace with yours..
