Sometimes I ask my children to vote on what they would like to eat. Because I pay for the food my vote really is the only vote that counts.
If you are voting and you don’t know who is counting the vote or how the vote is being tallied, you are not ‘voting’. You are participating in an annual state ritual.
After you vote you get a sticker. You get no receipt, no legal document stating who will count your vote and what legal measures you can take to verify your vote was counted. Nothing. You get a sticker.
FEDEx, UPS tracks your packages. Who or what tracks your vote? How do you know it reached anywhere? You vote, turn around, go home and watch TV to hear from corporate sponsored media outlets the results.
Voting is an annual state sponsored ritual in which millions of people line up in the streets as a public display and demonstration of their confidence in their democracy. It’s symbolic. If no one votes its a sign of the people’s lack of confidence in the state and its democracy.
If you want people to vote the people should have over sight in how the votes are counted. They CAN create technology for over sight.
If the owner of the plantation you were on decided that he was going to hold an election to see which enslaved person can serve as the representative for all the enslaved persons on the plantation, should anyone run? No. But if ppl ran then I guess you should vote. Or should you?
Which would be the best way for the people to convey their wishes, demands, hopes and ambitions? By voting or not voting? Everyone will have a different answer. You decide for yourself what is right.
Voting in America is a hopeful feeling ritual that requires numbers (like mega churches) to effect the feeling that something wonderful and transformative is happening. The more people in a megachurch the better the people feel.
