The #SupremeCourtofIndia has of late drawn a lot of flak for being anti-Hindu, anti-Dharma, anti-democracy and a lot of other things. But which of their recent judgements has been anti-Government (rightly or wrongly)?

Take Dahi Handi. The Maharashtra Government welcomed the judgement, declared their intent to make it an international sport and and agreed to devise guidelines for participant age and handi height. Not the worst thing in the world, but recall the outrage over it!

Take the #Diwali cracker ban. The Centre has opposed a blanket ban, but the Chattisgarh Government banned it in six cities. Union Minister Harshvardhan welcomed the ban in Delhi but backtracked later. More High Courts banned crackers, all supported by State

Take #Sabarimala. The Kerala Government was for temple entry, the BJP and RSS didn't voice opposition but welcomed the judgements post facto, and that's how it ended from the courts too

Take #377scrapped. The Central AG argued that it was based on Victorian Morality and not Indian tradition, and off it went, much to the chagrin of the ultra-right.

Take the #Rohingya issue. The Centre filed a strongly worded response, telling the court rudely that India is not the dumping ground of the world, and #Rohingya "human rights" can be stuffed. The result: No stopping the first batch of 7 deportations

Same goes for another petition on troop deployment in sensitive areas of the North East. The Centre sternly replied that troop deployment, right or wrong, is a decision of the Defence establishment, and the court has no business telling them where to deploy. They won that again!

Long story short, the Courts are overarching and all of that, but very very rarely controverting the stand of the relevant Government. If you think the Courts are being too "progressive", it's also because those rulings have the silent and often tacit blessings of the Govt.

And where they HAVE taken a concrete stand against the petition and told the Courts to stuff it they've mostly had their way. Are our courts really as "arbitrary" and "law into thrmselves" as they seem or does the real blame lie with the Government and the line they take?
