i genuinely think schools should think about moving toward economic instead of race based affirmative action. if the goal is having a variety of perspectives & input, getting a group of people from different races but the same tax bracket is only half of the equation
people who grew up with a certain lifestyle can not relate to or understand the majority of America because they’re insulated with the same high income people. it bleeds over into the workforce, into politics.
also, i can guarantee being low income has a much more adverse effect than being black. the cost of tutoring, test courses, the tests themselves... not to mention someone working throughout school obviously has less time to study than one who doesn’t
i think more people would support an income based affirmative action, & it would still end up helping a lot of the same groups. it’d also be more fair
one of my wealthier Ghanaian friends told me that she felt kinda guilty for benefitting from affirmative action when she knows it wasn’t meant for her & i assume that’s hard to admit.
