Today, I have seen tweets asserting that ‘speculation’ regarding a person’s biological sex is perfectly acceptable, and that intersex people ‘can be’ women. Enough.
Intersex disorders are almost all sex-specific i.e. they only affect either males or females. Examples: males can’t have Müllerian agenesis and females can’t have persistant Müllerian duct syndrome.
People with intersex disorders are not freakish half man/half women hybrids. They can’t self-impregnate or ejaculate eggs out of a ‘female penis’.
Most people with intersex disorders undergo normal primary sex differentiation (ovaries v testes).
Most people with intersex disorders have morphological defects occurring in the ongoing development of the reproductive system. Such defects do not obscure biological sex.
Speculating on whether e.g. a female missing a uterus is ‘truly female’ is abhorrent, and using people with intersex conditions to justify political discourse (sex is not binary, therefore trans) even more so.
Again, most people with intersex conditions do not have an ambiguous biological sex.
Most importantly, people with intersex disorders are people, and telling any person with a medical pathology that their condition must ‘mean’ what *you* think it means is rude, offensive and insensitive. End/
