First: I want to establish that the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is a CIA front group that has nothing to do with democracy and everything to do with promoting imperialism and capitalism (thread) https://twitter.com/authcom19/status/1019407281664995328
This is from their own website. They literally trace their origins to the exposure and cessation of "covert funding from the CIA to wage the battle of ideas"
The US gov decided that they could no longer take the covert CIA approach bc of the optics so instead they created the NED which "though non-governmental, would be funded primarily through annual appropriations and subject to congressional oversight" (again from their website)
The NED operates through giving grants to political parties, media, business, and labor organizations, and strangely enough they're very selective in which countries they focus on promoting democracy. In they 1980s they heavily focused on the USSR,
The NED groups countries based on 'democracy'- from closed societies, to transitional societies, to emerging democracies, to full democracies. The second image, again from their website, shows that they consider communist countries undemocratic- a convenient way to focus on them
They focus on controlling information, funding media that "[strengthens] popular understanding and intellectual advocacy of democracy", which it follows from the last tweet includes anything anti-communist, since according to them communism is anti-democracy.
The NED backed the Free Trade Union Institute (FTUI), a project of the AFL-CIO (yeah I'll get to them someday), which printed Delo, an anti-communist pro-Yeltsin 'left' newspaper. The FTUI was also against the former soviet trade unions which were the strongest at the time
Here are some of NED's actions in the USSR by year, with some important ones circled. As you can see they had two main operations- creating research to bring back to the US on supposed human rights violations in the USSR, and spreading pro-western media within the USSR
The first president of NED openly bragged that they do what the CIA did '25 years ago', and there's a good bit of crossover in personell between the two agencies, including the two mentioned below
In case you were puzzled by how open they seem about their work- 1, notice how little outrage there is over this, 2, they are notorious for misplacing/misusing funds (cough covert ops) including a stunning operation run through my dad's alma mater, University of South Carolina
Oh yeah that Free Trade Union Institute? The USSR was far from the only country they were involved in- here's someone involved happily admitting that without FTUI flooding the country with NED money the leftists would have dominated the trade unions in the Philippines
Cablegate was an excellent resource for discovering how NED functions- here's an American embassy calling for discontinuing funds after they weren't able to control how they were used, and another talking about NED fellow's involvement in a protest in Vietnam
huh I wonder why...
Here they are admitting to a major role in the overthrow of the Sandinista government in 1990. While they can't provide support to candidates they do anyway through superpac like organizations except with less rules.
They played a major role in the fall of the USSR and subsequent organization of the former member countries, backing Yeltsin and often fascist parties.
And NED is far from done- they're as active as they've ever been, heavily involved in countries such as Russia, Venezuela, and Haiti
This isn't even the tip of the iceberg, and I plan to return to more specifics at some point, but it should be more than enough to conclusively show that the NED is a CIA front working to attack anyone standing up to capitalism and imperialism
