[THREAD] - The art of disagreement, and how disagreement within ARMY can be a strength rather than a weakness.

Well, y’all talkin’ bout “y’all” can’t really generalize millions of individuals. ARMY agrees a lot. ARMY also disagrees a lot, with each other & the GP. Sometimes we do it really gracefully - like textbook awesome - other times, not so much.

Disagreement within ARMY is healthy. It spurns creativity. It can help us to reexamine our points of view & find new and better methods. Through disagreement & thoughtful debate we have improved in areas like voting, streaming, trending, charting, & engaging with media outlets.
Disagreement within ARMY is a strength. It's a sign that we're critical thinkers, highly engaged, & passionate about @BTS_twt. It’s also a testament to our diversity and unique life experiences that inform our perspectives.

So if disagreement can be a strength and an asset to our online space, why does it seem to rip ARMY at the seams & threaten to pull us apart? Why does it feel like disagreement weakens us?

This is because it’s not disagreement itself that’s the problem, but how we react to disagreement. First, take a look & see how many of these “dysfunctional disagreers” you recognize. People who use these strategies don’t advance conversations in positive ways.
@BTS_twt
@BTS_twt
So how can we get better at using disagreement to our advantage? Start by getting over yourself. No, seriously - stop thinking that your idea = YOU. An idea is an abstract thought; you are a human being. You are not your idea. Once you disassociate yourself from your idea +
you won’t get butthurt if someone disagrees w/you. You also won’t act like an egomaniac when someone agrees w/you. It opens up a whole new realm where you can disagree w/another person without getting overly emotional, & guards against extremes.

Another way we can improve is to identify if the disagreement is “above the line” or “below the line”. Above the line = general, big picture. Below the line = finer details. Both are important, but it’s vital to reach agreement above the line, & less important below the line.
If you find a disagreement w/fellow ARMY going into microdetails, it helps to circle back out & figure out what you actually agree on. You might be surprised to find you’ve been down a rabbit hole arguing for no good reason about insignificant details.

So now that you know your idea ≠ you & to focus more on the big picture and "above the line" thinking, it's time to really do the work – that is, the work required to understand the other side.

If you enter a disagreement with no understanding of the opposing side, you can’t escape your own bias. Consider the question “What if I’m wrong?” You’ll either learn how to strengthen your opinion or something new that may change your position.

Whether you find your own thinking flawed or not, disagreements don’t have to have winners & losers. Instead, let’s be on the same team finding better solutions. Stan twt doesn’t have to be a constant search for your archenemy or nemesis.

Listening to the other side goes along w/doing the work to understand. Yeah, that’s cool & edgy that you can spit some clever comeback online in 2.3 sec. Stan twt is oversaturated with these types, you’re not special. What’s rare? Thoroughly listening/reading before responding.
So now you can disagree like a pro, but remember: you don’t have to engage in disagreement in the first place. Some people get off on conflict, like to create drama, or just want attention, so these tools & any rational thought you throw at them will have zero effect.
@BTS_twt
@BTS_twt
Not only do some people thrive in chaos, they don’t care if they burn the timeline to the ground & take all of @BTS_twt & ARMY with them. These types aren’t here for BTS, they’re here for themselves – for RTs, for clout, for kicks. Beware.

In the end, while it’s possible to agree to disagree w/out either side walking away bruised it’s also OK to just go. Mute/block is your friend. Got energy that needs an outlet? Don’t waste it on attention seekers, put it to work for @BTS_twt, a worthy cause. ᶦ ᶫᵒᵛᵉ ᵗʰᵉᵐ
This online space can be a better place if ARMY creates a culture that honors differences of opinion & values different points of view. So let’s continue to disagree, overall it’s good for us. Let’s be the ones who can claim disagreement as a strength, not a weakness.
