Lots of chat on here about the FSM and the private companies being used to deliver.
I know that foodbank parcels (which are different to these FSM) are in no way better than actual £ to buy fresh food. But we are 'Emergency Food' for people in a very difficult circumstances. 1/5

Our parcels are made up with items that cover breakfast, lunch and dinner, with items meant to be cooked like pasta and rice - highly filling and nutritious too - all meant to be a very short stop-gap while the £ comes in. Tins of fish, tinned tomatoes to make a tasty sauce 2/5
When a donor calls to say 'what should i get' I ALWAYS SAY, very gently, 'Please try to give what you would like to eat', as that reminds us all that we want these parcels of food to contain really good and tasty food - not the 8p tins of peas I see sometimes. 3/5
Also, a qualified nutritionist with the Trussell Trust has signed off these packing lists, so the list contains all the right food groups from the Eat Well plate - i.e. carbs, tinned fruit and veg, baked beans (we have tons - literally), oats for porridge, tinned meat, 4/5
Lastly, our single box of food is meant to have around £17/18 worth of food, but in practice it hits nearly £30 (a jar of large coffee can be £6 alone), plus we give out nappies and toiletry packs (worth about £10 approx). We also give fresh fruit out (apples and oranges). 5/5
This is all to say we do what we do very carefully and with lots of love, but we know we are not the answer.
Government intervention, benefit reform, more £ in people's pockets, better housing rights, living wage - all these will bring the changes we need. Thanks
