Today

On 16 December 1972; Vijay Tendulkar’s play Ghashiram Kotwal was performed by the Progressive Dramatic Association, Pune. It was established by Bhalba Kelkar in 1952

The play was directed by Jabbar Patel; music by Bhaskar Chandawarkar; choreographed by Krishnadeo Mulgund
After the first 19 shows, the play was abandoned by PDA because it was termed as "an anti Brahmin play"

The production resumed under a new group Theatre Academy, Pune in 1973

The Theatre Academy production continued till 1992 with 500+ shows in India and 63 shows in Europe etc
Satish Alekar tells me, the last show with the original cast was performed on 6 December 1992 in Kolkata

Alekar says, "We lost many artists including the playwright, music director and many more actors during this journey of almost half a century"

We salute them on this day
